King Haileselasie and President Johnson was having a lunch in a European
country after they both attended a United Nations conference. During the lunch
the conversation they were having got a little testier and they started to
point out each other's cultural weaknesses. President Johnson said "Your
Highness, my intelligence report tells me your people urinate in every corner
and ally in your capital city." The king replied " Dear President Johnson,
surely you must know your people also do outrages things like walking on the
streets while eating, don't you people have respect and appreciation for the
food you eat?" When the conference completed both leaders went back to their
respective countries agreeing to meet some other time.
Years letter Haileselasie came to Washington DC on his way to visit a Latin
America country and President Johnson had the King stay in the White House.
During his stay, The king sat down with the President to sip an afternoon tea
on the White House terrace. Using binoculars, they were also observing the
people outside go about their businesses. Suddenly the King exclaimed " Aha! I
can see somebody urinating in an ally!" turning to President Johnson with a
vindictive smile he said " You also have people defecating the streets, isn't
that so Mr. President?" President Johnson was so embarrassed, he gave the
secret agents an order to bring in the fellow who was urinating in the ally
immediately. When the fellow was brought in Haleselasie froze on his seat, Lo
and behold it was the Ethiopian ambassador.
