An American tourist who traveled to visit Ethiopia during Mengistu's time went
to the main post office in Addis to mail his post cards to his folks. As he
was standing at the counters he observed a peculiar thing taking place with
the people around him who were busy to send their mails out. What attracted
his attention was the way the stamps were bouncing off of the envelops while
the people were trying to paste them to their mail. Mesmerized, the tourist
got closer to one of the people and inquired as to why the stamps were
bouncing up and about and the lady replied " Oh, that was because this months
stamps are featuring Mengistu's picture and people were spitting on the
picture instead of leaking the adhesive."
